My Current SAHM Mom Routine (with a 3 Year-Old & Baby)

A solid routine is anyone’s secret to success.

So if you’re not happy with how life is feeling at the moment, then the quickest way to make a changes is to take inventory of how you’re spending your days.

How our routines make us or break us

Too much activity packed into our daily routine and life will start to feel congested. Too little and we may feel underwhelmed with our day (and the progress we’re making toward the future).

Like everything in life, our routines require balance and moderation.

A little bit of flexibility is good but consistency should be the rule not the exception. Because a routine that reflects what’s important to you–and that is consistently lived out day in and day out–is like a high yield bank account. The interest compounds.

Those daily workouts pay off. Those day bags prepped the night before pay dividends in stress-saved the next very day.

A good routine is the framework for a good life.

Here’s the current routine I’m living as a mom of two littles and I love it:

My current mom routine (as a mom of a three-year old and five month old)

5 am – My baby wakes up (nurse, change, & cuddle)

5:30am – 6a – My toddler wakes up (cuddle, read, help get ready for day)*

6am – Baby is in baby wrap carrier, I get coffee and get toddler set up with a play box + light breakfast snack of greek yogurt and fruit

  • Gather laundry from all rooms & start wash
  • Gather garbages from all rooms & compile into kitchen garbage (take out garbage if needed)
  • Gather dishes and start dishwasher (if needed)
  • Play music or a sermon

6:30a – My husband makes breakfast… usually eggs & potatoes or protein oatmeal (nothing fancy)

7:30a – Baby naps & mom works out. Toddler eats breakfast.

8:15a – I shower, then double-check day pack is ready for the day (diapers, snacks, change of clothes, water bottles, and lunch. More chores as needed.

9:15a – “Pre-school” lesson for my toddler since this is the time of day she’s most interested in learning “school stuff” (we practice numbers, letters, and colors). I eat breakfast.

9:30a – Set up individual play for each little one in family room (a toy for baby and busy box for toddler) + music

9:45a – Bathroom breaks

10a – Load up into car & leave house for day. Small snack in car (beef jerky stick, cheese, or mandarin orange).

10:30a – Arrive at location (library storytime, gymnastic, playdate or some other planned activity for the kids)

11a – Baby naps in baby wrap carrier

12p – Lunch (dinner leftovers from last night)

12:30p – Next activity, errands, or home

1p – If at home, quiet hour (storytime player and toys). I make dinner during this time and any time remaining I can use to get caught up on message or working on our calendar for the upcoming weekend and/or holidays

2p – Baby naps. If I’m just getting home, then I use this time to make dinner. If I’ve already made dinner then it’s 1:1 time for my toddler & I.

3:30p – Heat up dinner & draw bath

3:45p – Dinner

4pm – Bath time for toddler (sometimes I bring dinner to the bathtub to help her eat)

4:45pm – Brush & floss teeth

5p – Bath time for baby

5:15 – 5:30p – Nurse & put baby to bed

6pm – Storytime for toddler

7pm – Lights out for toddler. And time for mom (read, write, relax, bath, etc.)

9:00p – Read (usually a mixture of scripture, nonfiction, and fiction)

9:30pm – Bed time

Note: Depending who is needing what during this time, my husband and I will usually divide our team between each little one. Either I’m helping the toddler get ready for the day and he is carrying our baby around the kitchen. Or, vice versa. It’s dictated by who is needing what.

This is a full day but I actually build in so much buffer for transition time that it really goes smoothly. My general guideline is to be over prepared with my day bag (way more food then I think I need plus change of clothes and layers for change in weather, too).

I hope this was helpful for someone! If so, please share some feedback below. I love knowing that someone out there was able to read this and find it useful for their lives.
